Companies do not struggle to buy marketing help. They struggle to buy presence. The market is full of retainers that deliver decks, not weeks.
A retained marketing practice is a person in the operating rhythm. The send plan. The editorial meeting. The ugly QA. If that person is a principal, the work has a standard. If that person is a rotating junior, the work has a costume.
MBX is built as the first kind. One operator. Email, social, or a mission that sits across both. The conversation is with the people who already own the channel — not with a new layer of account management.
Retainers fail in a predictable way. The brief is vague. The cadence is a monthly readout. The company is still doing the work, and paying to be told they are doing it. That is consulting as commentary.
The test is simple. Can the VP point to what was held this week. Not what was recommended. Held.
A diagnostic mission is different in duration, not in standard. Four to eight weeks should be as operational as a twelve-month seat. The end date is not permission to be abstract.
If you are shopping for a bench, this practice is the wrong shape. If you need a senior operator inside an existing function, it is the right one.
Write when the work is already serious. The first conversation is the brief, the team, and the constraint. Not a chemistry lunch.
